Learn how to effectively integrate SPF into your daily skincaretailored for mature skin's specific needs.

Keep reading for a step-by-step guide along with an understanding of why SPF is a helpful addition to your skincare routine.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPF

Sun protection factor (SPF) is the number that indicates how well a sunscreen can protect your skin from UV rays, specifically UVB rays, which can cause sunburn and potentially lead to skin issues over time.

SPF can be particularly beneficial for mature skin, which may have experienced more sun exposure and changes over the years, making it important to consider in your daily routine.

SKINCARE LAYERING BASICS

Each step in your skincare routine (cleansing, exfoliation, applying serums, moisturizing) contributes to maintaining healthy skin.

Skincare layering is straightforward when you follow this rule: Thinnest to thickest. This allows the lighter formulas to absorb first, enhancing the effectiveness of each product.

Before you apply SPF, your routine may include cleansing, applying serums, exfoliating to remove dead skin cells (1-3 times a week), and moisturizing.

It’s not just about preventing sunburns; it's part of a daily practice that supports long-term skin health.

LAYERING WITH OUR MINERAL TINT SPF 31, STEP-BY-STEP

STEP 1: CLEANSE

Use our MANDARIN MELT CLEANSING BALM or our MOISTURIZING WASH (or both for a double cleanse) to gently remove impurities like sweat, sebum, dirt, and makeup without disrupting your skin's natural moisture barrier.

Denice’s Tip: If you did a full routine before bed,you don’t have to wash in the morning! Just give your skin a quick swipe with a toner, like our CITRUS CUCUMBER TONER, before the rest of your AM routine.

STEP 2: EXFOLIATE

Exfoliation involves removing dead skin cells to promote the appearance of fresh skin. This should be done 1-3 times a week to avoid over-exfoliation, which can strip your moisture barrier and cause irritation, redness, and even peeling.

There are two types of exfoliation: chemical and physical.

  • Chemical Exfoliation: A chemical exfoliator - like our DEEP ENZYME CLEANSE, uses ingredients like glycolic acid and fruit enzymes to gently dissolve dead skin cells.
  • Physical Exfoliation: A physical exfoliator - like our Bamboo & Aspen Bark BAMBOO REFINING POLISH, uses superfine particles to scrub away dead skin cells.

Denice’s Tip: Combine both types and apply them before showering to get the benefits of both. Leave on during your shower, then rinse and gently buff your skin with a towel to remove any excess cells and impurities.

STEP 3: APPLY SERUMS

Serums are concentrated formulas designed to target specific skin concerns.

  • CLARIFYING SERUM: A leave-on exfoliant aimed at helping to clear pores and smooth the complexion.
  • VITAMIN C PLUMPING SERUM: Designed to provide hydration and protect against environmental factors.
  • BAKUCHIOL WONDER SERUM: A plant-based alternative to retinol, aimed at hydrating and brightening skin without irritation.

Denice’s Tip: If using multiple serums, apply them from thinnest to thickest. Start with the CLARIFYING SERUM, followed by the PLUMPING SERUM, and finish with the BAKUCHIOL WONDER SERUM.

STEP 4: MOISTURIZE

Moisturizing is a key step, especially for mature skin. As skin changes over time, it may benefit from products that support hydration.

A rich moisturizer like our CREAM can be beneficial, featuring natural botanicals and antioxidants like jojoba oil, ylang-ylang, and CoQ10.

You can use it in the morning to lock in moisture and keep your skin protected all day long. Use in the evening for an overnight moisturizing treatment to wake up refreshed and replenished.

Denice’s Tip: Mix some CREAM with a few drops of our NOURISHING OIL in your palm, emulsify, and pat on your skin for an added boost of hydration.

STEP 5: MINERAL TINT SPF 31

After cleansing, exfoliating, applying serums, and moisturizing, it’s time to apply your sun protection.

Our MINERAL TINT SPF 31 is formulated with zinc oxide, known for its broad UV protection and suitability for sensitive skin. The universal tint blends into various skin tones without leaving a white cast.

This tinted sunscreen combines the benefits of bare skin, makeup, and sun protection, offering a natural finish for a radiantly fresh look throughout the day.

Denice’s Tip: Shake thoroughly before use to ensure the natural minerals and oils are well mixed. You can even apply with a beauty blender or brush.

STEP 6: APPLYING MAKEUP OVER SPF

Minimalist makeup trends like the “No-Makeup Makeup” look are more popular than ever, focusing on enhancing your skin’s natural glow.

Our COLOR & SHIMMER DUO includes two multitasking lip-to-cheek pots with nourishing oils and Vitamin E. These can be used on your lips, eyes, forehead, or anywhere you want a hydrated and effortless pop of color.

Denice’s Tip: To keep SPF from pilling or smudging makeup, gently pat the SPF into your skin until fully absorbed.

SPF MISTAKES TO AVOID

On cloudy days, don’t skip sunscreen—UV rays can penetrate clouds and affect your skin regardless of the weather.

Remember to apply SPF to your neck, ears, and the bottom of your chin/jawline, as these areas are often exposed to the sun more than you may realize.

IN CONCLUSION

MINERAL TINT SPF 31 combines sunscreen, makeup, and skincare with a chemical free, non-toxic, reef safe formula!  Knowing when and where to apply it daily can help keep your skin protected and looking its best.
