Silicones in Skincare: Why We Choose a Different Approach

Silicone liquid dropping into petri dish

In the wide world of skincare, few ingredients are more controversial than silicones.

They’re common and effective at what they’re designed to do, sure, along with creating that unmistakable silky, velvety-finish that many consumers associate with “luxury.”

So why don’t we use them at IN YOUR FACE SKINCARE?

Keep reading to find out.

WHAT ARE SILICONES IN SKINCARE?

Silicones (like dimethicones) are synthetic ingredients that are used to enhance texture and spreadability of products. They create a smooth glide, blur the look of fine lines temporarily, and help makeup apply evenly.

They’re not inherently harmful. In fact, they’re widely used and considered safe in cosmetic formulations.

That being said, their primary role is sensory: they improve feel and surface appearance…

And that’s it.

FEEL VS. FUNCTION: OUR INGREDIENT PHILOSOPHY

At IN YOUR FACE SKINCARE, we formulate with a simple priority:

Every ingredient must do something meaningful for the skin.

Silicones are surface smoothers. But they don’t nourish, strengthen, or support the skin barrier in the long term.

We choose to focus on:

  • Bioactive botanicals

  • Biomimetic peptides

  • Antioxidant-rich plant extracts

  • Nutrient-dense oils

  • Barrier-supporting lipids

So when you apply our products and feel that cushion, glide, or comfort, it’s not coming from synthetic ingredients coating your skin - it’s coming from functional, natural ingredients that are FEEDING your skin.

That smooth texture you experience after? That’s a byproduct of performance.

BREATHABLE FORMULATION VS. COSMETIC SLIP

Silicones create an occlusive barrier that sits on top of the skin, like putting a piece of Saran wrap over your face.

Some people may like that, but for our customers, especially those with mature, congested, or reactive skin, we prefer a more breathable approach.

We formulate with botanical oils and lipids that integrate with the skin’s natural structure. These ingredients:

  • Mimic the skin’s barrier

  • Support ceramide function

  • Reduce transepidermal water loss

  • Deliver antioxidants and essential fatty acids

Instead of creating the illusion of smoothness, they help improve the condition of the skin itself.

It’s a subtle difference–but an important one.

ARE THEY HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT?

While they are considered safe for topical cosmetic use, certain volatile silicones — such as D4 and D5 (cyclotetrasiloxane and cyclopentasiloxane) — have raised environmental concerns in regulatory discussions.

These molecules are highly stable and break down very slowly in nature. Because of that stability, studies have shown they can persist in aquatic environments and have the potential to bioaccumulate over time.

Some regulatory bodies in Europe have classified specific siloxanes as persistent and very bioaccumulative under REACH guidelines.

For our formulations, we choose a different path.

Rather than relying on synthetic surface-smoothing agents, we formulate with bioactive plant oils, biomimetic lipids, and functional ingredients that integrate with the skin and support barrier health.

The texture you experience comes from nutrient-dense ingredients designed to nourish and perform — not simply create cosmetic slip.

Our approach is intentional:

  • Prioritize long-term skin function

  • Use ingredients that align with our environmental standards

  • Formulate for visible results, not just sensory finish

This isn’t about fear.

It’s about formulation choices.

We focus on ingredients that work in harmony with both the skin and our broader ingredient philosophy.

INSTANT RESULTS VS. LASTING RESULTS

Many formulas rely heavily on texture-enhancing ingredients to create immediate gratification: silky feel, blurred lines, slip.

We formulate for visible, cumulative results.

That means:

  • Supporting collagen architecture

  • Strengthening the skin barrier

  • Improving hydration retention

  • Reducing oxidative stress

  • Encouraging cellular renewal

The experience may feel different than a silicone-heavy formula–slightly more “alive,” more absorbent, more skin-like.

That’s intentional.

You’re feeling nourishment at work.

NO FEAR. JUST FORMULATION.

To be clear: Silicones aren’t villains.

They’re tools.

For our brand, we simply choose tools that prioritize long-term skin health and bioactivity over cosmetic finish.

Luxury doesn’t have to mean synthetic slip.

It can mean thoughtful formulation. Intelligent ingredient selection. And products that respect the biology of your skin.

That’s the standard we hold ourselves to–every single time we formulate.
