How to Unclog Pores and Make Them Look Smaller

“How do I shrink my pores?”

It’s one of the most common skincare questions… and it usually starts with the wrong goal.

You can’t actually open, close, or permanently shrink your pores as they themselves don't have a muscle. Pore size is influenced by genetics, oil production, and age.

So the "tightening" sensation people associate with cold water isn't a pore muscle relaxing or contracting. Cold water triggers vasoconstriction — blood vessels near the skin's surface narrow to conserve heat. That reduces blood flow to the area, which can calm minor swelling or puffiness and gives skin a firmer, tighter feel temporarily. It's the same mechanism as using a cold roller or ice on a puffy face.

What actually changes visible pore size are things like:

✓ Sebum buildup stretching the opening
✓ Skin swelling slightly from heat or inflammation
✓ Collagen and elasticity around the pore
✓ Dead skin cells and debris stretching the follicle opening

But you can help clear what’s clogging them and improve how noticeable they look.

And those are two different jobs.

If your pores look larger, darker, or more noticeable than they used to, the first question isn’t necessarily “How do I shrink them?”

It’s “Are they clogged, or simply more visible?”

Here’s how to tell the difference and what to do about each.

Know the Difference

Clogged Pores vs. Large Pores

A pore is a tiny opening at the skin’s surface associated with a hair follicle and sebaceous gland.

Sebum is supposed to travel through that opening to help lubricate the skin. But when excess oil mixes with dead skin cells and other debris, it can accumulate within the follicle and contribute to congestion.

That can show up as:

✓ Blackheads
✓ Whiteheads
✓ Small bumps
✓ Rough or uneven texture
✓ Pores that appear darker or more prominent

That’s a congestion problem.

But a pore can also be completely clear and still look noticeable.

Genetics play a major role in pore size, while increased oil production can make pores appear more prominent. Age can affect their appearance, too: as skin changes and loses some of its firmness and elasticity, pores may become more noticeable.

That’s an appearance problem.

Knowing which one you’re dealing with changes how you approach it.

Step 01

Unclog the Pore

If you’re dealing with congestion, start with what’s happening inside the pore.

One of the most useful skincare ingredients for this is salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid (BHA).

Unlike alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) that are water-soluble, salicylic acid is oil-soluble. This allows it to work within oily areas of the follicle, helping loosen and remove the buildup of dead skin cells that can contribute to clogged pores and blackheads.

This is also why aggressively scrubbing your face isn’t the answer. You can polish the surface of your skin without adequately addressing what’s accumulating inside the pore, and too much physical exfoliation can leave skin irritated.

Our Pick for Congestion

CLARIFYING SERUM

Our CLARIFYING SERUM takes a targeted approach to congested-looking skin with willow bark alongside ingredients selected to help keep skin looking clear, balanced, and smooth.

The goal isn’t to strip every trace of oil from your face.

Your skin needs sebum. You just don’t want oil and dead skin cells accumulating where they shouldn’t.

CLEAR. BALANCED. DECONGESTED.

Step 02

Make Pores Look Smaller

Once congestion is under control, you can turn your attention to the appearance of the pore itself.

And this is where the strategy changes.

You cannot permanently change your genetically determined pore size with a serum. What you can do is address some of the things that exaggerate their appearance.

Keeping pores clear is part of that.

So is supporting smoother, firmer-looking skin around them.

As skin ages and its structural support changes, pores can sometimes appear more prominent or elongated. Improving the overall appearance of skin texture, firmness, and resilience can therefore make pores look less noticeable, even though you haven’t physically “closed” them.

Our Pick for Pore Appearance

BAKUCHIOL WONDER SERUM

Our BAKUCHIOL WONDER SERUM is designed for exactly this kind of bigger-picture skin support.

Bakuchiol is a botanical ingredient often used as a retinol alternative because of its ability to improve the appearance of common signs of skin aging without actually being a retinoid.

Our formula pairs it with ceramides, purslane, licorice, amla, and astaxanthin to support smoother, more even, and more resilient skin.

Rather than trying to “shrink” a pore, you’re improving the complexion around it.

SMOOTH. SUPPORTED. MINIMIZED LOOK.

Build the Routine

How to Unclog Pores and Minimize Their Appearance

If you’re dealing with both congestion and noticeable pores, don’t attack everything at once. Build your routine around the two different goals.

Step 01

Double Cleanse

Remove makeup, sunscreen, excess oil, and the buildup of the day without leaving skin feeling stripped. Oil begets oil so an oil cleanse is important.

Our DOUBLE CLEANSE DUO pairs an oil-based first cleanse with a second cleanse for an easy two-step routine.

Step 02

Address Congestion

Use your CLARIFYING SERUM to target the conditions that contribute to clogged pores.

Step 03

Support Smoother-Looking Skin

Incorporate BAKUCHIOL WONDER SERUM to address texture, tone, and the appearance of resilience around the pores.

Step 04

Moisturize

Don’t skip moisturizer because your skin is oily or congested. Supporting the skin barrier is always important.

Finish with THE CREAM as your final moisturizing step to support the skin barrier and help prevent moisture loss.

Step 05

Wear Sunscreen

UV exposure contributes to many of the structural changes in skin that can make texture and pores more noticeable over time.

The goal isn’t to wage war on your pores.

Clear what’s clogging them. Then support the skin surrounding them.

Avoid These Mistakes

What Not to Do to Your Pores

Sometimes what you don’t do is just as important.

Don’t repeatedly squeeze blackheads. Don’t try to “open” pores with hot water and “close” them with cold water — they don’t work like doors. And don’t assume that more exfoliation automatically means clearer pores.

Overdoing acids, scrubs, peels, and other actives can leave your skin irritated without solving the underlying issue.

More isn’t always better.

The right treatment depends on what you’re actually trying to accomplish.

Target by Concern

What About the Rest of Your Serums?

Once you’ve handled your primary concern, your serum routine can become more targeted.

VITAMIN C PLUMPING SERUM

For brightness, uneven tone, antioxidant support, and dark spots.

BIO PEPTIDE EGF-6™ FIRMING SERUM

For texture, tone, resilience, and the appearance of mature skin.

You don’t necessarily need all of them at once.

Choose your serum based on the job you want it to do.

The Bottom Line

Stop Trying to “Shrink” Your Pores

If your pores bother you, don’t immediately reach for something promising to “shrink” them.

First, figure out why they’re noticeable.

If they’re clogged: focus on clearing excess oil and dead skin cell buildup.

If they’re clear but prominent: focus on smoother texture, firmness, sun protection, and supporting the skin surrounding them.

Because unclogging pores and minimizing the look of pores aren’t the same thing… and your skincare shouldn’t treat them like they are.
