Why Skincare Matters for Guys

This is Michael, Denice’s husband, and CEO of IN YOUR FACE SKINCARE. Time for me to write a blog post for the guys.

News flash: Most of us don’t do much with our skin. I was one of them before Denice started making these products. We guys are a bit lazy when it comes to this sort of thing. If it’s easy and convenient there may be a chance we’ll do it, but there also has to be a payoff.

At the time I’m writing this, I’m a 63-year old former athlete and musician, with a penchant for power tools and man-glitter (I personally did all the reno work on our last two houses), and while these days I spend more time on spreadsheets than circular saws, I understand the difference a quality tool makes when it matters.

Women may not understand the difference between a power drill with a brushless motor, ½” chuck and torque control and one of those cute USB-charging electric screwdrivers they sell on TikTok, but we do.

One of the main things I do here at IN YOUR FACE SKINCARE is make sure that we create the skincare versions of that quality power drill. Thankfully, Denice is way ahead of me on that.

But here’s why that matters to you: you’re a team player.

If you’ve stumbled up on this (or even been made to read it!), your woman likely invests in her own appearance with our products and she may not have said it, but trust me, she wouldn’t mind if you did something similar.

Now, I know some guys who use more skincare products than my wife, but that's not me. Like you, I already have enough on my mind, like who to start on my fantasy team or if I’m overdue for an oil change.

But, we should also want to look our best for our woman (and ourselves) so we should figure out how to make it happen. And I’m here for you on that.

I have been using at least THE CREAM since we started making it in bulk. My routine has grown since then, but it’s still wicked simple. Especially in comparison to most women. Simplicity and speed is king for me.

Most of us guys don’t have a clue about a lot of this. Honestly, I am still on kind of a “need-to-know” basis with skincare. Sure, I should use all of it, but do I want to? No, not really.

I know that I need to be a team player, sure, but I also don’t want to look old and wrinkled if I can do something about it. So I do. And you can too.

Michael’s Routine

I only do my routine in the morning, and half of it is in the shower.

In order, I use these:

DEEP ENZYME CLEANSE

This is a “chemical exfoliant” which means it breaks down dead skin cells and has other performance ingredients that nourish your skin.

I put a couple pumps of this on my face before I get in the shower on dry skin. I keep the bottle in the shower because Denice uses it there too, but I grab it before I turn the water on.

You should only start using this once or twice a week (same with the next product) and you may feel it start to tingle with a little burn. When I start to feel it is when I go to Step 2.

BAMBOO REFINING POLISH

This is a “physical exfoliant” and just like what it says, it’s like that orange pumice hand cleaner you have in your garage, but for your face.

Put a dime-sized amount in your hands and rub that on your face. Now add a bit of water and it will lather up slightly (it’s not filled with a bunch of chemicals that will make tons of suds – you don’t want that).

If you have a beard, make sure you use this in there too. That’s a breeding ground for dry skin.

This is usually when I shampoo and condition my hair, and shave – which I don’t do every day.

If you’re new at exfoliating, you may not be able to wait to rinse these off as that little burning can grow uncomfortable after a few minutes, but over time it will get less and less and you’ll be able to do this a lot more often and for a longer time.

My pale Irish skin can do this every day at this point because I worked up to it.

MOISTURIZING WASH or GINGER MINT WASH

This depends on my mood but I do lean toward the MOISTURIZING WASH’s gel and woodsy scent.

And I know you already feel like you washed your face. This will help remove not only any remaining scrub or dead skin but also residue from your shampoo and conditioner.

You could certainly start with just one of the first two – DEEP ENZYME CLEANSE or BAMBOO REFINING POLISH but it’s a killer combination.

VITAMIN C PLUMPING SERUM

So once I’m out of the shower it’s a quick little process of these next steps.

This is right after I get out, while my skin is still a bit damp. Rub a couple pumps in your hands and apply it to your face.

Coffee wakes you up. Vitamin C wakes up your face. It'll help your skin look less weathered and improve the look of redness from years of sun, sports, and generally not wearing enough sunscreen.

I put this on my face and then I make sure to get some more on my neck, especially the back where that Sun damage was. If you have dark spot areas, give it a little more there.

BIO PEPTIDE EGF6® FIRMING SERUM

I’ll wait a bit after the VITAMIN C PLUMPING SERUM so I start getting dressed and after a couple minutes I go back in and apply this.

I start with half a dropper, spread it out on my fingertips and put that on my face, then I take the rest of the dropper and use it on my neck.

I’m from New England, and as much as I love Bill Belichick I don’t want to have his hanging neck (my Dad had it as well), so I make sure to get this firming goodness on there every day.

The neck is one of the areas age shows the most, so don’t forget to use it there. And don’t wash off whatever’s left, put it on the back of your hands!

THE CREAM

This is not only what started our company, but also what started my skincare routine.

I had only used this one product for years (because that’s all we had) and I “graduated” to others as we made them. If for some reason I’m running super late, I ALWAYS use this, even if I can’t use the others.

You don’t need a lot. I use more than my wife says I should, but I think a guy’s skin tends to be drier. But again, you don’t need a lot, less than a pea-size, rub it in your fingers a bit and rub it in.

If you are more prone to oily skin (your woman will know if you don’t), then I would recommend our MARINE PEARL CREAM. It’s a mattifying moisturizing cream that has a very different, but also very beneficial ingredient deck.

Our Social Media Manager, Anthony prefers that with his Italian skin being more on the oily side.

A Note on SPF

You may notice you don’t see an SPF on this list. I’ll use it, but only when I’m going to be in the sun for an extended length of time – like on my Harley, my friend’s jet skis or playing soccer.

I know I should wear it daily, but I don’t feel that walking the 3 feet from my car into the office warrants it.

But I do have some sun damage from years of soccer not using it (the VITAMIN C PLUMPING SERUM has helped a lot), so I’m more diligent now, but I only use a mineral-only SPF. (We recommend this brand).

So that’s my routine. It’s six things usually, but only four many days. And these six steps will only take you a few minutes, especially once you get in a groove, and when you do, that is when you’ll see real results.

You know, your circular saw isn’t going to cut that 1” x 6” on its own. You need to use it. Same with skincare.

The Low-Effort Legend Trio

But, if you think even the above routine is too much for you, here’s a very basic 3-step kit for you that will get you started.

GINGER MINT WASH

Keep this in your shower. It’s a high-performance minty cleanser for your face and body because, honestly, who wants a different wash for everything?

Use it after shampoo and conditioner to wash away any residue. This is your first step.

BAMBOO REFINING POLISH

Keep this in your shower too. This is like that orange pumice hand cleaner you have in your garage, but for your face.

Use it a couple times a week as your second step to remove those dead skin cells that are silently grossing out your woman.

Look at that! This 3-step routine isn’t even three steps every day!

VITAMIN C PLUMPING SERUM

Keep this on your counter. After your shower, rub a couple pumps in your hands and apply it to your face.

Coffee wakes you up. Vitamin C wakes up your face. It'll help your skin look less weathered and improve the look of redness from years of sun, sports, and generally not wearing enough sunscreen.

No matter which way you go, you’ll look better as a result.

Time to step up to the plate for your woman!

BE A LEGEND

Cheers,

Michael
