Keeping your skin hydrated with a routine full of hydrating skincare products can do wonders for your skin, supporting improved texture, radiant skin, and reduced breakouts.
Even those with oily and combination skin who may avoid certain products find themselves drawn to these routines. That’s probably why skin flooding, the latest beauty trend on TikTok, has been receiving so much attention recently.
But what is it, exactly? Keep learning more about skin flooding, the benefits it holds for your skin, and how to do it.
WHAT IS SKIN FLOODING?
Skin flooding is a skincare technique that focuses on layering multiple hydrating products to “flood” the skin with moisture.
The idea is to saturate the skin with hydration to enhance its overall appearance and health, maximizing the skin’s ability to absorb and retain moisture, helping to support a plump, dewy, and glowing appearance.
“This method is meant to ‘flood’ the skin with intense moisture by layering moisturizing products onto damp skin from thinnest to thickest to ensure proper penetration,” explains Marisa Garshick, M.D., a dermatologist in N.Y.C.
“Although the concept of layering a variety of moisturizer techniques is trending on social media, it is not new — we’ve always known that hydrated skin is healthy skin.”
This is typically done during your evening skincare routine after you’ve lost much of your day’s moisture, but if you're extra dry, you can bring skin flooding into your morning routine, too.
WHY SKIN FLOODING IS STILL TRENDING
The skin flooding trend has been growing in popularity on TikTok and Instagram since 2023 - though it's not a new practice! This actually follows a Korean method of skincare which has been practiced for many years.
Dr. Joshua Zeichner, Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC, adds, "The trend is popular because it's simple yet effective. People are seeing immediate results, which they love to share on social media."
HOW TO DO IT
There are two methods of this procedure:
You can do the more traditional method, where you are applying ingredients in order of thinnest to thickest:
- Cleanse
- Toner
- Essences
- Hydrating serums (with hyaluronic acid in them to attract and hold moisture)
- Rich moisturizing cream and/or oil to seal hydration
But what is the difference between these steps and your regular routine?
Well, instead of waiting a bit between each step for your skin to absorb everything and dry, you’re going to do the steps above, one immediately after the other, effectively flooding your skin with a boost of hydration.
The other way is based on the CRIS Method: Cleanse, Remove, Impact & Saturate.
Therefore if you are using actives like Vitamin C, retinols, acids, etc., you’d want to apply those in your Impact step to a drier, more thirsty face, hence better absorption of those important actives.
THEN begin with flooding.
1. Cleanse
2. Vitamin C Serum
3. Peptides, Retinol, etc.
-Then time to FLOOD-
4. Toner (splash and pat it on)
5. Essence (sprays are great)
6. Hydrate (cream and oils)
