More and more men are exploring skincare, leading to plenty of skincare-related questions. Men have just as many skin concerns as women, but many are unsure of where to start or which products to use.
In a 2018 study, 84% of men between the ages of 18-44 said that they use some form of skincare on their face, while only 37% of men do so daily. It shouldn't be surprising that people like to look at healthy, glowing skin - and studies show that people with this skin have more friends, make more money, and go farther in their careers. After all, the face is called the Money-Maker!
If you’re ready to invest in your skin (you only get one set of it, after all), this is the guide for you! Keep reading for all the info you’ll need to get started with a good skincare routine. Don’t worry if things seem a bit intimidating, you’ll get the hang of it in no time.
STEP 1 - FINDING YOUR SKIN TYPE
Before you run out or get online to start buying products, it’s very important to know which skin type you have, along with any conditions you may have, though these can change depending on many different factors, from your health to the time of year.
Knowing your skin type will help you determine which products are right for you and more importantly, which ingredients your skin will need to stay maintained and healthy.
The major skin types are Normal, Oily, Dry, Combination, and Sensitive. Not sure which type is yours? Check out this blog post here!
STEP 2 - FINDING ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
When you buy a product, you’ll want it to fulfill its promise. If you buy a toaster, you would expect it to toast your bread, right?
Skincare products make promises to you and your skin, and their active ingredients are what allow them to fulfill these promises. In general, antioxidants (Vitamins C and E, green tea, niacinamide) are great for keeping your skin brightened and protected, while retinol and retinol alternatives (bakuchiol) are meant for texture, wrinkles, fine lines, and acne.
Every active ingredient is used to fight or prevent a specific skin condition, so it's important to find out exactly which ones your skin needs.
DENICE TIP: You may want to consider a retinol alternative like Bakuchiol if you have sensitive skin, since retinol can cause sensitivity.
STEP 3 - PUTTING TOGETHER YOUR ROUTINE
Now that you know your skin type, you can purchase your skincare products and test out your routine. Below is a sample routine, great for all skin types, that you can refer to. Feel free to give it a shot, or you can try your own routine and see what works best for you.
CLEANSERS
Keep skin clear of daily buildup. Instead of using your shampoo running down your face as your “cleanser” switch to our MOISTURIZING WASH in the shower for a pH balanced, nutrient dense, refreshing face wash to deeply clean sweat and dirt from the pores which helps prevent nasty breakouts..
DENICE TIP: Post sports or workout to remove SPF easily and thoroughly start with the MANDARIN MELT CLEANSING BALM and immediately follow up with the MOISTURIZING WASH.
EXFOLIATORS
When men shave their face it acts as an exfoliation which is fantastic. This action removes dead skin cells from the surface of the skin and promotes cellular turnover (bringing in new, healthy cells). But you should add a chemical and physical exfoliator to your regime 2-3 times a week at night.
Chemical exfoliation means strictly liquid with no particles. And our Influencer Obsessed (Rebecca Minkoff) DEEP ENZYME CLEANSE for a gentle exfoliating treatment with fruit enzymes and glycolic acid helps naturally dissolve dead skin cells.
The physical exfoliator choice, usually for oily, more problematic skin, would be our BAMBOO REFINING POLISH for a gentle, physical exfoliating treatment with Aspen Bark, Salicylic acid, Aloe, Green Tea, and Kaolin Clay to minimize pores and rejuvenate skin.
TONERS
Balances skin’s pH levels while hydrating and sealing in moisture. Can be done twice daily. In the morning a splash of toner can replace cleansing. No need to overwash your skin.
PROTECTIVE SERUMS
Delivers active ingredients directly to the skin to address specific skin concerns. Since men aren't usually wearing makeup, their skin is always exposed to the elements. Therefore, protecting skin is VITAL. Vitamin C is at the top of the list of anti-aging superheroes.
Serums can be used twice daily while rotating the serums you use in the AM and PM.
Product Recommendations:
VITAMIN C PLUMPING SERUM for dark spots, sun damage, dull skin, wrinkles, and fine lines.
CLARIFYING SERUM for brightening, smoothing wrinkles, unclogging pores, and evening out skin tone.
BAKUCHIOL WONDER SERUM nourishes and protects with a plant-based retinol alternative (bakuchiol) to nourish, protect, and strengthen skin.
MOISTURIZERS
Don’t forget this step - If you only do one thing! Even schmearing on a rich face cream just after brushing your teeth and before your face hits the pillow. Some men may not like the feeling of cream on their face but trust me, they will love the results they get. Those crows' feet creep up early and overnight treatments are effective ways to get fast results. A lighter moisturizer can be used in the daytime, with a heavier one at night.
Product Recommendations:
THE CREAM for hydrating and infusing skin with beneficial ingredients while helping to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
MARINE PEARL CREAM for mattifying skin while providing long-lasting hydration and minimizing pores. Great for oily skin types.
NOURISHING OIL for enriching skin while transforming dry patches and preventing early signs of aging.
BONUS: FACE MASKS
Instantly brightens, clarifies, or hydrates skin. Should be done once a week, in the evening.
Product Recommendations:
RADIANT DETOX MINERAL MASK for detoxification and strengthening the skin barrier. Great for oily skin.
PUMPKIN ENZYME MASK for resurfacing skin and minimizing pores with fruit enzymes, BHA, and AHA’s.
BLUEBERRY BOOST MASK for delivering superfoods to your skin to keep it protected, firm, and smooth.
